Its me - 3D Artist and Gamedesigner

Postby Blade » Mon Aug 17, 2009 10:39 am

Hello everybody!

My name is Paul, I am 19 years old, from Germany (sorry for my English) and finished school now. Now I search for new adventures and experiences, because I want to become gamedesigner and/or 3D artist in future.
I am from the C4 forum, so I got know "Rhys" in there and introduced me into your project.

It seems to be the first very interesting project I found for the last months. I also thought about starting an own project, but I think thats a bit too much for my time and skills.

I am 3D artist for 6 years and gamedesigner (creating Design Documents). At the beginning I used programs like Blender, Truespace 5.1 and 3D Gamestudio, to get my first experiences in making games. Now I work with Maya and C4, that are my favorite programs.

I still dont know too much about your project, I have to read some threads and so on, but it interests me very much. I am afraid, that the aims "Rhys" told me about are a bit too high (graphic like Oblivion, bigger world and so on) but I will do my best to help this project as good as possible.

I can also offer my knowledge in game engines, performance and some other little game-relevant parts if you want.

Here are some references from me:

For the future I am happy to work with you together!

At the moment its a bit confusing for me: The forum is big and has many sections, but I dont really know how far your development progress has gone. Do you already need some models? Maybe I could create something for the beginning...

Hey Blade, it is truely great to have another 3d artist on board, and your modelling work and work within the C4 engine is great! And I'm extremely pleased that you find our game interesting, we really hope it will be appealing.

The project is very confusing for new members, we've tried to keep everyone as informed as possible, but we have yet to really become organized as to what stage of the process we are in. I'm going to look around the forums for some threads I think you'll find interestin and perhaps some concept art to create models from. (We have quite a few plants we need for the environment if you'd be interested?)

In the mean time, allow me to welcome you to the project! Hopefully you'll be given a lot of opportunity to test your skills with RoR. :)

About the plants: In Maya is a nice plug in implemented, which allows to create many different trees and plants. Maybe that could be useful:

... and many other. But the poly count is quite high, but the plants are modificable, maybe we can still use them.

I will be happy about every other task I get. I get involved into the project with the time...

Do you have any extracts from design documents (you've made), that you can share? I'd be very interested personally in seeing one, and maybe other members of this forum too.

I'd love to be part of a design writing, but it obviously implies that I'd know how to execute the designs, I was writing, in the engine.

Hi welcome :)

The graphics aim wont be as good as oblivion, but hope it will be much better than morrowind, as for the world size most likely yes it is too big.
Not all the areas will be very detailed though, for example they may be vast empty grass plains which otherwise might take up too much space if the map was small.
Later today im going to layout basic shape of our prototype (which will be an island from the map) in what size it will be in game, then we can get a feel for how big it really is.

Those plant plugin looks good, although high poly, could use them to render alpha maps and textures to put on low poly plants.

Edit:
forgot to mention, the game will be free and single player only

@ Pound: I am writing on design documents for a few months and I only do it for myself, so I dont think that there is something interesting in there. Its only a document for me, so I know how the game works, but other people cant work with this design document. I dont know exactly how to write a DD, like structure and content. They are also in german written, so you cant read it I think. But if you want to, I can share them with you.

There isn't a set structure for a design document, that's why I would have like to have read one of yours. But I can't read German, so nevermind.

Okay, sorry, but thanks for the tip! I thought, there were a strict structure in DDs, like in scripts for movies...

Hello Blade, sorry I didnt get a chance to greet you sooner. I'm realy excited not only to have another moddler on board but also to have someone else who is interested in game design. It's true that for the first years of this project we were sadly regreting that area.

As for game design docs, there are lots of different ways you can structure it. I'd recomend a very good book that talks about this and also about writing for games and game design. an excelent book: http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Guide-Vi ... pd_sim_b_1

welcome aboard!
