Duman's Catalog of Shenanigans

Postby Duman » Wed Nov 19, 2008 5:18 pm

Howdy, Duman here.
I just figured that if people "really" wanted to know what I was currently up to, they could check here. As a warning, I will most certainly not be posting here often.

As of a week or two now, my "helpful" contributions have been minimized to random and often slightly insane posts. No concept art. Some of you may ask "Why?" I say because this is a non job related activity, it must stay fun and interesting to be pursued. And as my interests often fluctuate, so does the work flow. When I started, the work flow was nice and steady, and I was having all sorts of fun.
But then I got a craving to start some sci-fi pieces, and Gears of War 2. So currently I am drawing up a series of weapons and soldiers for a post apocalyptic video game my room mate is working on, and pilfering my time away sawing mofos in half with my chainsaw gun. After this project is finished, which will be relatively soon as it does indeed have a due date (unlike a certain other project I know of...) I will resume my work with ROR.

Upon my return, I hope to try out some more environments (even though Im terrible at art), some character concepts and possibly fantasy weapons. Of course I could toss a few creepy critters in there while Im at it. So thats my schedule until around December first or so.

Now, back to pushing old people down stairs.

Well, if you want a small taste, here is the kind guys Im designing right now.

I have only ever fully painted one of them before. And that was a year ago and looks like crap. (like all my work)
So the results should be interesting in the least.

Very nice, Duman! Asside from the head being very small (remember, it's a padded helmet so there is a head inside of it.) the proportions are correct. I like the line style of art you're using there. And we understand. It's always nice to branch out and try other avenues with art. I have been making cash on the side doing portraiture, and it has definitely gotten me more than my attempts a CA. Keep trying out new things.

Uhhh, actually ROR is the departure from the norm for me. I like fantasy, but Sci Fi had always been my primary concern, and in many ways still is. The head might be a little small, as to stress the power, height and mass of the armor. But yeah, always working on proportions. Still learning, ya know?

That's good actualy Duman. The fantasy genre is plagued by insane amounts of sterotyping- something our project has stood to rebel against for at least 2 years. I've always said that I'd preffer scifi artists particularly for our biological ares: plants and animals. Because while scifi has it's own share of cliches, at least the aliens, mutants, and AI (if not thier personalities) are almost always original.

I didn't realize till you said so that that was supposed to be a heavy power armor. It actualy gives the impression of being rather lightweight and tight fitting. Now of course, I'm not expert on scifi but I do play Warhammer 40k (nids, if you care to know).

Let me suggest a couple things that would create a heavier, powerarmor like feel. first of all, the dark spots at the kees and armpits look like they're quazi armor spots designed for flexibility (as in real armor, which is good.) but, I think that you should increase the size of bits around there, to accentuate the fact that the armor is bigger than the body underneath- particualry the shoulder and the boots. sholders of course will increase the "buffness" and big boots give it a nice grounded, heavy feeling. I realize that this looks like more of a medium armor than supperheavy spacemarine style, but I think you'd still retain that and create a more masculine, warlike sioloute. Otherwise I like a lot of things about the concept- I'm particularly fond of the way you used the lines of Renaisance armor to create a nostalgic feel. ]

Sorry if you werent looking for, or caring to hear my anylisis and suggestions... I realize this isnt my project. But sadly, this is just how am- I anylize things- though it almost makes me want to work on a scifi project when I look at nifty concepts like this!

PS- the concept also shows that you know how armor. Which makes me more excited to see your armor concepts for us when they come.

Well its like power armor, but think more along the lines of Haze or Gears of War. Not so much a Space Marine, who I freaking love. I can one up you, I have nids, and Nurgle, and Salamanders.
And really, this particular armor was designed simply to look good, did not really think about function. He is not even attached to the concept project with my friend. Just a sketch. Maybe I'll post some more up, but only if your good little children.

Fine, have it your way.

I was most certainly not good :D

I like this one. The only thing that jumps out at me something of little importance, that I'm sure you probably noticed... hands!

Yeah, the hand on the handle is a little small. The reason you can't see his left hand is because there is a perpendicular handle on that side of the gun, and he is holding that.

Yes it does suck, and yes there are many fundamental design, shape and lighting flaws, but I think it helped me improve. Here's to the fading hope that I will get better at this.

Bump?

Oh sorry its taking so long for an update art wise. With the holiday, family and this huge freaking school project I have little time to sketch.

It hurts my insides.

That armour is great. it does not suck. The feet are huge though, and the one hand is twice the size of the other
Im guessing the wires going into his head are controling the suit?

Didn't you know? Big boots are all the rage in war. (see Gears of war)
As for the hands, one is meant to be a huge powerfist kind of device, so the size difference is intentional. The tube pump him full of medical serums and other stuff to keep him alive, as he is badly scared and injured.

As you all as my witnesses, I, Duman, will freaking update with some actual work this weekend. Possibly tonight.

And if I don't follow through with this I will...
Uhhh,
do something drastic.

I would chop off my thumbs, but I need them for doing things that require thumbs.

Work for teh win!

Haha, butt cork.
