Before you get classes you'll get a race. This will set your beginning stats and of course your appearance. However, I think it would be nice if each race had some unique abilities that the player could use frequently (not once per day as in MW). I think we could conceivably make some interesting ones, for example:

Cortar: Iron body (Passive) the rough training of the Cortar makes them resistant to pain, giving them +1 to armor even when not wearing any. Negotiation (Passive) The cortar's political skills give them a bonus (10%) to any in-dialog persuasion.

Astar: Practical Mastery (Passive) Astar often use practice magic to compensate for their aging bodies, hence practical spells cost 10% less to cast. Wisdom (Active) By applying tricks and lore they've gathered in thier long lives, the Astar can use the right spell, tweaked just right to have max impact. Wisdom gives a temporary buff to all magic schools effectiveness.

Ekkash: Brutal Tactics (Passive) Close quarters attacks (more on this when we expand combat) cause 10% more dammage. War Shout (Active) once per combat the player can work themselves up with a blood curtling roar, this can frighten away low level foes and gives a speed boost to the player.

Dwarrow: Master Craftsman (Passive) The Dwarrow are naturals with crafting. when using Forging or Craftsmanship, the amount of progress with each click is reduced 20% (making it easier to controll). Stone wall (active) the people of Derrow can be as hard and ushakable as stones. after activiating this ability, while not moving the player's armor class is boosted by several points.

Tiritan: Swift strider (Passive) Tiritan's effective speed is 30% higher. Song of Tanjella (Active) A powerful song that can soothe the savage beast- causes enemies in range to be calmed and stop attacking, however, the player is also affected and cannot attack for a period of time. (This is good for escaping danger without bloodshed).

I did more, but I left my book at work :(

Here's the other 4 playable races, I have yet to decide exactly what some of these abilities will do.

Delarri: Well educated (Passive) Adds a bonus to benifits recieved from training? Water Affinity (Passive) Not sure, perhaps a combat bonus when near the sea?

Lanviri: Greethumb (Passive) gains more output from harvesting plants. Magic Arts (Toggle, active) When using magic arts magic is less controlled and will have random secondary effects occasionaly (within the same school as the original spell) but have a higher chance of failure.

Morim: Silent (Passive), simply adds to stealth. Dark sight (Passive) this might have to be active, because we don't want the player to be stuck in some wierd looking night vision camera the whole game.

Wirrathi: Wirrathi Magic (Passive), Bartering is effectively 10% higher than the negotiation skill. Bartered blessing (active) for a number of coins equal to the players level, his next action involving chance will have a higher chance of succeeding.

And, also from a while back- my proposed Starting stats for each race. Races are currently rather specialized, perhaps a broader and more average approach better jives with our character freedom approach that we're looking at now. Bold indicates a race we are planning to include in the first round of races (hence is important)

______Stre___Agil___Wis___Charis
Astar_25____25____105____45*
Cortar_90____30_____30____50
Delarri_70____55_____45____30
Dwarr._70____40_____50____40**
Ekkash_80____65_____25____30
Lanviri_25____65_____90_____30*
Morim__50____75____40______30
Tiritan_35_____95____30_____40*
Wirr.___40____65____30_____65
Maliak__75____75____25_____25

* Note that skills start off at the same level as thier govorning stats. However, they may not be higher than 80 in the beginning.
** Dwarrow get +30 to Tinkering and Forging starting levels.

we can always expand classes in the future, but for now, I think we should pick a core set that we want to have initially. So here it goes:

Tier I
Warrior, Ranger, Magician, Craftsman

Tier II
1. Soldier- combat (skills: Sword, Shield, Axe, Mace, Shaft, Brawl)
2. Thief- agility (skills:Stealth, Dagger, Lockcracking, Climb, Archery, Acrobatics)
3. Mage- Magic (skills: Agressive, Defensive, Practical, Mystic, Devicive, Magic Craft)
4. Merchant- business (skills: Blacksmith, Carpentry, Craftsmanship, Havesting, Negotiation, Apothecary)
5. Assassin- combat agility (skills: Stealth, Dagger, Sword, Archery, Brawl, Apothecary)
6. War Magician- combat magic (skills: Aggressive, Defensive, Devicive, Shield, Brawl, Shaft)
7. Mercinary- combat business (skills: mace, shield, axe, blacksmith, negotiation, Archery)
8. Rogue Magician- agility magic (skills: Aggressive, Practical, Devicive, Stealth, Acrobatics, Lockcracking)
9. Tinkerer- agility business (Skills: Carpentry, Craftsmanship, Negotiation, Acrobatics, Lockcracking, Climbing)
10. Augmentor- magic business (Skills: Defensive, Mystical, Devicive, Carpentry, Craftsmanship, Apothecary)

I'd also like to see an ability for each of the classes

Tier I
Warrior: Warrior focus: attack speed buff
Ranger: Burst of speed: toggle to increase run speed and attack speed
Magician: Inner strength: restores fatigue
Merchant: Stretch materials: use less raw materials for crafting.

Tier II
1. Soldier- combat (skills: Sword, Shield, Axe, Mace, Shaft, Brawl)
2. Thief- agility (skills:Stealth, Dagger, Lockcracking, Climb, Archery, Acrobatics)
3. Mage- Magic (skills: Agressive, Defensive, Practical, Mystic, Devicive, Magic Craft)
4. Merchant- business (skills: Blacksmith, Carpentry, Craftsmanship, Havesting, Negotiation, Apothecary)
5. Assassin- combat agility (skills: Stealth, Dagger, Sword, Archery, Brawl, Apothecary)
6. War Magician- combat magic (skills: Aggressive, Defensive, Devicive, Shield, Brawl, Shaft)
7. Mercinary- combat business (skills: mace, shield, axe, blacksmith, negotiation, Archery)
8. Rogue Magician- agility magic (skills: Aggressive, Practical, Devicive, Stealth, Acrobatics, Lockcracking)
9. Tinkerer- agility business (Skills: Carpentry, Craftsmanship, Negotiation, Acrobatics, Lockcracking, Climbing)
10. Augmentor- magic business (Skills: Defensive, Mystical, Devicive, Carpentry, Craftsmanship, Apothecary)

Heh - I am reading this, but do notice the fact that you triple-pasted that last part.

Actually, it's a quadruple post if you look back a page. My choices are, wait for someone to comment (which is not going to happen), edit my post (in which case nobody will know that I'm even working on this), or just multi post. I chose the last.

[EDIT] Oh, I see what you mean. Edited the post (I had somehow written the same thing 3 times)

i have some ideas for the leveling, will copy and paste at a later date.
When hunted, the beaver escapes with his life by biting off his testicles. If he is hunted for a second time he shows his incompleteness and is spared.

oh, is it quite different than this? Because I had already written most of this in the GDD and considered it "final". But I guess it's never to late to think about fresh ideas.

Yeah, discussion should always be open on every topic, just in case something blows us away and we have to implement it. I'm interested to hear your thoughts at least, Marco, as you usually stay out of the gameplay discussions for the most part.
